Docker is a core technology at resin.io as both our backend services and users’ applications run in containers. That’s why DockerCon is a massive event for us, it’s littered with new ideas which could serve both us and our users.
Our role in the opening keynote
We were invited to take part in the opening keynote alongside littleBits, which are small components that magnetically snap together to create circuits instantly. LittleBits created an elaborate Rube Goldberg machine that eventuated in a container being pushed to devices dispersed throughout the venue. Once the containers where deployed the devices equipped with LED displays ran the new code turning them into applause-o-meters. Once the crowd’s cheers reached a target audio level we’d welcome everyone to the event using text-to-speech.

Despite facing a few difficulties (the network crashed intermittently throughout our demo), the containers were eventually deployed and the crowd played their part with a hearty cheer to kick off the event.
Awesome demo from littleBits and resin.io – demo gods are now with us. Applause-o-Meter was great #dockercon

Presentation
Our team members Shaun Mulligan (@ShaunRMulligan) and Andrei Gherzan (@agherzan) gave a lighting talk centered around how we use yocto to unify our host operating system. This unification gives us the ability to support boards with different architectures and boot processes with the one OS. This increases board adoption rates and decreases maintenance overhead. You can view the slide deck here.
Our booth
We also hosted a stand in the expo area, where we had the chance to talk all things containers and IoT, show off the “mini beast” – our 24 pi fleet – and hand out some Ltd. edition resin.io t-shirts. Interestingly, we were one of the few completely IoT focused stands at this largely cloud orientated event. Even with the shortage of IoT focused companies, it was encouraging to see developers enthusiasm and belief in containers running on edge devices.

So all in all it was a busy couple days, but there were lots more exciting things to see!
Some standouts for us:
- Claire from CoreOS – An Open Source Vulnerability Analysis for your Containers.
- DockerCraft – A simple Minecraft Docker client, to visualize and manage Docker containers.
- Docker Content Trust – Docker’s emphasis on usable security.
It’s great to be involved in a community as active as Docker’s and amazing to see how it’s changing DevOps both for the Web and the physical world.
