For several (transformative) years, balena’s mission has been to ‘unlock the potential of physical computing by removing friction from fleet owners’. This mission served as a north star, driving our efforts to make a significant impact on the friction encountered by developers and businesses across the globe whilst working on IoT and edge computing challenges in the real world. We are incredibly proud of what we have built (including our failures) and the strides we’ve made in this direction. However, in a world where technology and society’s needs are in a state of constant evolution, it’s time for us to revisit our mission.
Our mission
We’ve just navigated through a pivotal moment in the life of our company, where we changed our leadership structure and strategy and focussed our efforts onto those products that we believe have the most impact toward our mission. As we emerge from the other side, we realize that we’ve realigned our compass, and as such the mission statement no longer reflects where we’re going and what we want to change in the world.
As such, we’ve rewritten our mission statement to more accurately reflect where we’re going and what we’re doing:
“Enable people to leverage technology to address the real world challenges of our time.”
At Balena, we dream of a future where cutting-edge technology and physical infrastructure are integrated seamlessly, empowering individuals, communities, and businesses to address the real world challenges of our time. We believe in an open ecosystem that removes barriers and eliminates gatekeeping, granting everyone access to the full potential of the latest technological advancements.
Through unifying software and hardware, we aim to enable ordinary people to achieve extraordinary outcomes, bringing the seemingly impossible within reach. Our commitment to improving lives and fostering positive change motivates us to continuously develop accessible and intuitive solutions that enable our world to change.
We’ve witnessed firsthand the pioneering projects our customers and community have brought to life. We are honored to provide a platform that nurtures this creativity and accelerates the deployment of these ideas. Our new mission statement reinforces our commitment to this belief and to our community.

This shift in our mission statement transcends mere words—it’s a reflection of our core values and our vision for the future. We stand for Enablement, Openness, Transparency, Reliability, and thinking from First Principles. Each of these principles is at the heart of everything we do at Balena, internally and externally.
As you may already know, Balena is now led by three co-CEOs. This unusual arrangement mirrors our mindset. It represents our belief in diverse leadership styles and that leadership goes beyond titles—it’s about stepping up, making an impact, and propelling the company forward. Each of us brings a unique perspective and skill set, and together, we’re committed to fulfilling our mission.
We believe in operating transparently and actively seek feedback from our community. We’ve created a public roadmap and are committed to providing regular updates on our blog and social media pages. Our aim is to keep you informed about our progress and how we’re working to enhance our product.
Recognizing that businesses built on our platform require a dependable and secure product, reliability is at the heart of our product development. That’s why we’re focusing our efforts on enhancing the security and reliability of balenaCloud and implementing the features our customers need most.
Lastly, ‘thinking from First Principles’ encapsulates our drive to challenge norms and continuously evolve. We’re not content with maintaining the status quo—we’re about pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and creating a better future.
Refactoring our mission is a big deal for us. It shows our commitment to helping people use technology to solve real-world problems. It reflects our dedication to our values and our promise to do our best for our customers and our community.
